Philip Gary Allmon was promoted to Glory on July 10, 2019, after complications resulting from diabetes and a heart condition. He was born on June 26, 1944 in Alameda, California, the eldest child of Ona Beatrice and Warren Steven Allmon. As a child, he also resided for a time in Fresno, California before moving back to the Bay area, where he graduated from Fremont High School in Oakland.
Phil enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 18, on June 29, 1962, and served for 20 years as a member of the Naval Security Group, achieving the rank of CTMCS (Cryptologic Technician Maintenance Chief Senior). His Naval duties took him to Kamiseya, Japan and Treasure Island, San Francisco, before he was deployed to NSGA at Lajes Field, the Azores, Portugal. Here he met his future wife, Carolyn (nee Aadland), who was employed by the DOD overseas teaching program and was teaching math to military dependents. They were married on August 24, 1968 when Phil was stationed at the Naval Schools Command, Treasure Island. Subsequent duty stations included Naval Communication Station, Adak, Alaska; NTTC Corry Station, Pensacola, FL and NAVCAMS EASTPAC, Wahiawa, Hi. where he was transferred to the Fleet Reserve on July 31, 1982.
He received his post-secondary education while in the Navy, at Del Mar College, Corpus Christi, TX: Associates Degree; Chaminade University, Honolulu, HI: BA and MA in Business Administration.
After moving to Minnesota in the summer of 1982, he instructed in Electronics at Dunwoody Institute and Dakota County Technical School. Following training in Asbestos Abatement, he worked as an Environmental Health & Safety Consultant at MacNeil Environmental. His Health and Safety career continued at the Minnesota Department of Education where he worked with schools on health and safety issues and administered funds available for these projects. Phil retired from the Dept. in 2008 after 15 years of service. His work in making schools safer for children and school staff members in the state was gratefully acknowledged by the Department, State Fire Marshall’s office, and Minnesota’s Educational Service Cooperatives.
After retirement, when his health still permitted, Phil enjoyed volunteering with the men of Redeemer Monday Morning group and Fairview Southdale Hospital.
Phil is survived by his wife, Carolyn; sisters, Judy Allmon of Kennewick, Washington and Annette Harmon (Gary) of Alpharetta, Georgia; foster son, Mark Snigaroff of Adak, Alaska, cousins, Jim Allmon (LInda), Mike Allmon and Carol Leenstra and many nieces and nephews. His parents and sister, Jean Espinda, preceded him in death.
Phil was a loving husband to Carolyn, generous and sensitive to the needs of others, who sought God’s will in all that he did.
Funeral services are scheduled for July 24 at 10:30 AM at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 115 Wayzata Blvd. West, Wayzata, MN, with public viewing preceding at 10 AM and lunch following the service.
Internment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Redeemer Lutheran Church.
